Bir-Billing
Assuming yourself, 11,500 feet ( 3,500 m ) or more above the stunning country side of tea plantations, forests and fields, competing with the Himalayan griffon vulture for the right thermal currents is enough to mesmerize you to come to Billing, some 79,00 feet ( 2,400 m ) above sea level. Billing is nearly 14 kms away from the tiny Tibetan settlement of Bir in the state of Himachal Pradesh. Billing is the take-off site and Bir is the village at the landing site. The bald peak of Billing has been a venue for hang-gliding for more than two decades. With an arena of 200 km for high altitude and cross country flying, Bir-Billing, as flyers refer to the area, ranks among the world’s top 10 paragliding sites. It is blessed by nature and is perfect as a launching pad, making it an ideal place for paragliding and hang-gliding. Adventure sports enthusiasts flock to Billing, from all over the world, mainly between October and January, which is the best time to enjoy these sports. Bir is sheltered by the Dhauladhar mountains and the ridges behind keep rising to 3000 mtrs, 4000 mtrs, ++ one after the other so a pilot can fly at 4000 mtrs and still watch the mountains tower above. Bir is a beautiful village surrounded by tea gardens and spectacular scenery, whereas Billing offers unique opportunities for high altitude and cross country flying and flights of 180 kms have been achieved from here. The road distance between the two is 14 km. Bir-Billing also falls on the trekking route originating from Dharamshala. Many trekkers have praised the beauty of Bir-Billing. The temple of Baijnath is a famous pilgrimage centre for not only local people but for outsiders as well. Buddhist monasteries of Bir are worth visiting. Fine Tibetan handicrafts are also produced here. Holi Festival is a riot of colours and celebration of spring, along with it comes laughter and vitality. There are exuberant celebrations at Bir. During the festival, locals come dressed in their best clothes and dance and sing joyously. They carry Gods dressed in finery, which are placed in colorful palanquins.
